Google Expeditions is giving teachers the ability to take their students on virtual field trips around the world. From the lens of Google Cardboard or Google Daydream, Expeditions currently has over 600 tours to explore, from the Taj Mahal to Machu Picchu. Currently the Expeditions App is available on Android but soon to be iOS as well.
Expeditions is a tool to extend learning inside the classroom and give students a more visual and immersive overall experience. The ease of use for Google Expeditions via Google Cardboard makes it widely accessible as long as you have a smart phone, and also gives students the ability to take it home with them.
Having teachers assign specific homework associated with the Expeditions app is another way for students to engage in a visual experience and in my opinion a lot more memorable then a textbook. Textbooks are obviously important but combining a visual experience with homework can prove very effective for the overall learning experience.
Google Expeditions is a cheap way to expand learning cognition and so far it seems to be a wild success in the classroom and beyond. Expeditions won’t ever take away from a real field-trip, but it’s a great alternative and fun way to engage students.
