How doctors used VR to save conjoined twin sisters

A recent Washington Post article from Peter Holley shows real potential with vr as a technology in the healthcare field. In this case, two conjoined newborn sisters in Minnesota with a condition known as thoraco-omphalopagus had their lives saved after a dangerous nine-hour procedure. Doctors were able to use vr glasses to study the twins hearts in a virtual environment and gather details from the in-depth 3D model including leads into one of the twins hearts being more reliant on the others.

Can VR improve your kid’s eyesight?

A new study by The Beijing Advanced Innovation Center for Future Visual Entertainment suggests that extended use of high end HMD’s like the HTC Vive or Oculus Rift “could” have beneficial effects on preteens vision, and in some cases actually improving kids’ myopia or hyperopia.

The age range of the subjects were 9-12 years old and did exclude participants who have undergone myopia corrective
surgery or had eye problems.

Now the study only included Fifty eligible subjects for the experiment, including 26 males and 24 females so don’t raise your champagne class just yet. Granted with further testing there could be benefits in the future but it’s far to early to tell with such a small amount of subjects involved. That being said, there could be a bright side to VR and eye improvement in the future, especially as VR hardware continues to improve.

Stanford hosting AR/VR Conference for Innovations in Psychiatry and Behavioral Health (October 6-7th)

Stanford is hosting their 3rd annual conference called Innovations in Psychiatry and Behavioral Health: Virtual Reality and Behavior Change. This year the conference is focusing entirely on virtual and augmented reality (VR/AR) technologies and behavioral change. They will be exploring the ways that virtual reality and augmented reality can help in treating and researching addictions, ADHD, anxiety, PTSD, psychosis, pain, depression, psychosomatic illness and more.

They will also be hosting a “shark-tank style” innovation lab with demonstrations, and scientific posters. Stakeholders include psychiatrists, psychologists, behavioral scientists, neuroscientists, engineers, developers, designers, computer scientists, business people, etc.

A quote from Stanford’s Brainstrom Innovation Lab: “Virtual and augmented reality technologies are transforming what is possible in mental healthcare. That’s why we at Stanford are hosting a competition for ideas in virtual and augmented reality that can re-imagine the way mental healthcare is delivered.”

Bill Gates gets a glimpse of Virtual Reality and Medicine

In a recent blog post, Bill Gates got a glimpse of the future of Medicine through the HTC Vive and virtual reality. Bill was touring the Vaccine Research Center on the campus of NIH National Institutes of Health which included a very cool demonstration of how researchers are using VR to examine viruses for weak spots that they could target in making a vaccine or drug. This approach could lead to a universal flu vaccine and hopefully down the road lead to a universal HIV vaccine and more.
