I Am Your Beast VR Kept the Gunfights and Left the Tree Climbing on the Thumbstick

I Am Your Beast VR went on sale on Steam on Thursday, September 17. It is a PC VR version of Strange Scaffold's 2024 revenge shooter, priced at $22.99, or $20.69 with a launch discount that runs through September 24. You play Alphonse Harding, a retired secret agent who turns down one last job. The people who offered it come into the woods after him, and each level is a small patch of forest where you make them regret it.

The flat original, I Am Your Beast, came out on September 10, 2024, and holds an Overwhelmingly Positive rating on Steam from 5,502 positive reviews out of 5,630. Its store page describes the structure plainly: more than 20 levels built as "replayable micro-sandboxes," each one meant to be run again, faster. Strange Scaffold is the development label of Xalavier Nelson Jr.

Who built the port

This is the second game from Flat2VR Spark. Flat2VR announced the label at the VR Games Showcase on August 12, 2025, and its launch release calls it "a creator first label that partners world-class talent with Flat2VR's publishing muscle to ship official, fully licensed VR adaptations." The arrangement is simple. A small team, which Flat2VR calls a pod, builds the port. Flat2VR handles licensing, QA and platform certification. The pod gets credit and a share of the revenue, and the original studio keeps its IP.

That is a different deal from the hobby modding this scene grew out of. The first Spark release was FlatOut 4: Total Insanity VR, which Evan could not stop playing when it reached early access in May. Beast VR was headed down the same road. In June, UploadVR reported that it "hits SteamVR in Early Access later in 2026." It skipped that step. Thursday's release is a full 1.0.

What made the trip

The gunfights did. Mike Johnson played it on a Quest 3 through Virtual Desktop for UploadVR's review in progress, the only critic review out so far, and the detail he singles out is a design rule rather than a feature: "there is no reloading in this game. When a weapon runs out of ammo, simply chuck it at an enemy so it still has some use, pick up their dropped weapon, and keep it moving."

In a headset, that rule does a lot of work. Most VR shooters make reloading its own small skill. You drop the magazine, find a fresh one on your belt without looking, seat it, rack the slide. Beast VR throws all of that out. You fire until the gun clicks empty, and then the gun is a projectile. Flat2VR's launch copy leans into what two tracked hands add on top: "A pistol can be fired dry, tossed into the air, caught in the opposite hand, and replaced with whatever weapon happens to be within reach." You cannot do that with a mouse.

What stayed flat

Two of the original's signature ideas were not rebuilt for VR. The flat game advertises "superhuman tree climbing." In the headset, Johnson writes, "even though clear grab points are on trees and rock walls, you simply press up on your analog stick." So you look at a handhold and push a thumbstick.

The story took the same shortcut. The flat version tells it with what Strange Scaffold calls a kinetic typography cutscene system, meaning the words themselves animate on screen as the dialogue plays. In VR, the interludes are "recorded conversations in what is presumably Harding's bunker, with subtitles displayed over a video of the wilderness the game is set in."

Johnson's summary is that it "feels more like a very strong VR mod than a native VR game." That is fair, and for a Spark release it is close to the brief: the label exists to take work that used to be a mod and make it official. Hand-over-hand climbing is the kind of change that can arrive in a patch if enough players ask for it. Nobody has promised one.

How long it is

Short, on purpose. Some missions are locked behind grades on earlier ones ("one mission only unlocks when you get a ranking of B in a previous one"), and Johnson estimates that without the ranking system "this game would be done in less than an hour." If you like shaving seconds off a route, that is the whole appeal: the same small map, run again with a better plan. If you want a campaign you play once and put down, $22.99 buys you an evening.

Getting it running

It is on Steam only, for Windows, and tagged VR Only. No Quest or PS VR2 version has been announced. The requirements list OpenXR, the cross-vendor standard that most PC headsets now speak, along with Meta Quest Touch controllers. The minimum graphics card is an Intel HD Graphics 2000, next to a note from the developers: "It's not a very intensive game, but it can look really stylish."

On a Quest, you run it from your PC over a Link cable, Air Link, Steam Link or Virtual Desktop, which is how Johnson played it. Comfort options are thin. You get snap turn with adjustable degrees and no teleport, so if smooth movement makes you queasy, try it inside Steam's two-hour refund window. Valve has not placed it in any of the Steam Frame compatibility tiers yet.

Sixteen people had reviewed it on Steam by Saturday morning. All sixteen recommend it.
