Myst and Riven Remakes Launch on PSVR2 This Monday. Here Is Why That Matters.

Cyan Worlds is launching remakes of both Myst and Riven on PlayStation 5 and PlayStation VR2 on May 19. The two titles that essentially invented the adventure puzzle genre are arriving on Sony's headset at $34.99 each, with full support for both VR and flatscreen play. For a platform that has struggled to build a compelling software library, this is one of the most significant content additions PSVR2 has received in months.

What Cyan Rebuilt

Both remakes were originally developed for PC, with Myst launching in 2021 as a VR-first title on Quest and Steam before expanding to flatscreen, and Riven following in 2024 rebuilt from the ground up in Unreal Engine 5. The PSVR2 versions are not ports of the Quest builds. They are the full PC versions adapted for PlayStation hardware, which means significantly higher visual fidelity than what Quest owners experienced.

The technical specs reflect that. Both titles feature ray-traced reflections on PS5, with the option to toggle them off for 60 FPS or keep them on at 30 FPS. On PS5 Pro, graphical enhancements include improved view distance, foliage density, texture quality, post-processing, and shading. In VR mode specifically, PS5 Pro increases the base rendering resolution, which translates directly to sharper environments and more readable text on puzzle elements.

Hannah Gamiel, Cyan's Development Director, noted that ensuring both playstyles would shine was the hardest part of development. The studio built on lessons from Firmament, their previous title that also shipped with dual VR and flatscreen support. That experience clearly paid off here, because both Myst and Riven were designed from the start to function as complete games in either mode rather than treating VR as an afterthought.

Why PSVR2 Needs This

PSVR2 launched in February 2023 with strong hardware but a persistent software gap. The headset itself remains one of the best consumer VR displays available, with OLED panels, eye tracking, and haptic feedback in the controllers. What it has lacked is a steady stream of must-play content that justifies keeping it connected. Myst and Riven are exactly the type of experiences that remind people why they bought the hardware.

Puzzle adventure games are quietly one of VR's strongest genres. The format translates naturally because the core interaction is looking at things, touching things, and figuring out how they work. Myst pioneered that loop in 1993 on a flat screen. In VR, standing inside the mechanical age or walking through Riven's jungle canopy and physically manipulating the puzzles is a fundamentally different experience. These are not games that benefit from faster frame rates or competitive multiplayer. They benefit from presence, and that is what VR delivers.

The pricing is also worth noting. At $34.99 each, these are positioned as premium but not prohibitive purchases. For comparison, many PSVR2 titles launch at $39.99 or higher with significantly less content. Both Myst and Riven offer 10 to 20 hours of gameplay depending on how quickly you solve the puzzles, and Riven in particular is one of the most visually dense VR environments available on any platform.

Platform Details

Myst launches exclusively on PS5 and PSVR2 in the console space. Riven launches on PS5, PSVR2, Xbox Series X|S, and Microsoft Store. Both titles are already available on PC via Steam with Quest and SteamVR headset support. The PSVR2 versions represent the console VR debut for both remakes.
