Gears of War: E-Day Is Getting a Free Full-Campaign VR Mod, and You Start the Chainsaw by Hand

I played the first three Gears of War games on a 360 and stayed with the series after that, and in all those years the Lancer's chainsaw has been a button. You hold it, the game takes the camera away from you, and a canned animation does the rest. A modder who goes by rockonthehill wants you to start it with a lever. With your own hand. In a headset.

On October 18 he posted a trailer for a free PC VR mod covering the whole single-player campaign of Gears of War: E-Day, the Emergence Day prequel The Coalition made with People Can Fly and Xbox Game Studios released on October 6. Road to VR picked it up this morning. The footage runs just under three minutes and shows stereo rendering, full-body IK, manual reloads, two-handed aiming, fighting from cover and a turn on the gunner seat of a King Raven. His announcement post on X ends on the two lines that matter most: "Early WIP build. Free at release."

The trailer is already behind the build. About a day after it went up, he pinned a changelog under the video, and it reads like the work of somebody who has spent real time with a Gnasher in his hands. The chainsaw now starts on the lever and cuts into any enemy it touches, with no animation taking over. Melee is physical. Hands and weapons collide with enemies, walls and objects. The Longshot has, in his words, "a real working scope." Reloads are manual and different for every gun: a bolt action on the Longshot, shell by shell on the Gnasher, a slide rack on the pistol. Every weapon carries its own magazines, in your hand and on your chest.

Shell by shell on the Gnasher. That one got me.

Gears has always been a game about the half second behind a waist-high wall when you realize you are empty and a Wretch is already over the top of it. On a gamepad that panic is a button press and a reload bar. Make you thumb shells into a shotgun with a real hand while something is screaming at you from two meters away and the oldest feeling in the series gets a lot louder.

A three-day-old account and one video

Nobody outside his circle knew the name rockonthehill a week ago. His YouTube channel lists one video, the trailer. The X account was created on October 18, the same day, and has one post. There is a Ko-fi tip page with the same pitch, and I could not find an earlier VR mod under the name anywhere. In the comments he says he is building it on a Pimax Dream Air SE with an RTX 5080.

That is not a red flag. The Mario Kart 64 VR build I wrote about in August came off a repo with fifteen stars, and it was one of the best things I played all summer. Flat-to-VR work has always come from people with day jobs and no audience. What it does mean is that there is no track record to lean on yet, so the open questions stay open until he answers them.

The anti-cheat question

This is the part I would want answered before getting attached. E-Day's Steam page lists Easy Anti-Cheat, the non-kernel kind, and Steam starts the game through a single launch option named "Gears of War: EDay Protected." The app's Steam data also shows Valve's own Steam Frame testing marking the game Unsupported, with an anti-cheat configuration given as the reason, and its Steam Deck notes say even single-player wants an active internet connection.

Road to VR guesses the mod is a fork of praydog's UEVR, the injector behind most Unreal Engine VR mods, and that is a reasonable guess. rockonthehill has not said so. He has not named any tool at all. UEVR's own documentation tells users to "double check that the game you are injecting into has no Anti-Cheat mechanisms," and to stay away from multiplayer games unless the anti-cheat can be switched off to play offline. His build obviously runs, since the footage is captured from it. How a public release deals with that protected launcher, on strangers' machines, is something he has not explained. Not yet, anyway.

Then there is the version you own. E-Day is also on Game Pass for PC and the Xbox app, and when a commenter asked whether the mod works there, he said he has not tested the Xbox version yet. If you have it through Game Pass, wait for him to say so before assuming you are covered. And if you have a Steam Frame, this is a PC VR mod, not something the headset will run on its own. The Frame can stream it from a PC like any other PC VR game, but the game itself is not on the Frame's verified list and, going by that test result, will not be.

Before there is a download

There is nothing to install today. I would rather say so than pad out a setup guide for a mod nobody can download, so this is the short version: what to have ready, and where the real release will show up when there is one.

  • The game. Gears of War: E-Day is $69.99 on Steam. The Xbox app and Game Pass version is untested, so if you are buying it for the mod, wait until he confirms which versions work.
  • A PC VR headset and a strong GPU. His Dream Air SE and RTX 5080 tell you what it runs on, not what it needs. He has not published requirements.
  • The campaign. He says the mod is meant for single-player only. Do not take it into multiplayer.
  • The real sources. His YouTube channel and his X account are where the release will be announced. He has said the link goes up "when its done and ready."

One warning, and I mean it. A hyped mod with no download is exactly what fake download pages are built for. His video description says donations "do not give early access or any exclusive content," so anyone selling early access is not him, and any site with an E-Day VR installer before he posts one is lying to you. When a real build exists, it goes into our VR mods guide with install steps, the same as UEVR and the rest.

He has also said real crouching is on his list, so you can, his words, "crouch in real life and hide behind cover." Twenty years of this series, and the cover was always somebody else's knees. I want to see mine get sore.
