WinlatorXR runs Windows programs on a standalone VR headset. That is the entire pitch. It bundles Wine, the compatibility layer that turns Windows system calls into Linux ones, together with Box64 and FEX, which emulate x86 instructions on the ARM chip inside the headset. What you get is a Windows desktop on a curved screen floating in front of you, and there is no PC in the loop at any point.
A Windows Emulator Is Running Half-Life 2 on Quest 3, No PC Attached
You install it from SideQuest rather than the Horizon Store. The project's own site is blunt about why: official storefronts restrict the low-level Android APIs the app needs, so the app lives outside them. The current build, Computers Are Totally Screwed 27, shipped on July 1. A developer credited as Luboš V. handles the XR integration, on top of Winlator Cmod, itself a fork of Brunodev85's original Winlator.

The claim reached a large audience through Nathie, whose VR channel runs to 809,000 subscribers and 1,500 videos. "You can now play Half-Life 2 VR entirely standalone on Quest 3," he posted on Thursday afternoon, over a two and a half minute clip credited to Hostile VR rather than shot by him. The project's compatibility list supports the narrow version of that. Half-Life 2 is marked as working on Quest 3 and on the Pico 4 Ultra. So is Portal. A Korean VR channel called SideBook VR posted a four minute Half-Life 2 standalone test on Monday, then a longer updated run and a Portal 1 test on Tuesday.
The tracking arrives over UDP
Here is where it stops resembling what most people picture. WinlatorXR does not introduce itself to a Windows game as a VR runtime. It has its own interface, XrAPI, currently at version 0.5, and it talks over UDP on localhost.
Head pose and controller state go out on port 7872. The game replies on port 7278 with a string of floats. The game renders side by side or alternate eye stereo itself. And to keep the compositor locked to the right frame, the Windows app has to paint a sync counter into the top left corner of its own image as a shade of red, which WinlatorXR then reads back off the picture.
The project's documentation is honest about what that is. XrAPI is not built to replace an OpenXR runtime, and it has to be implemented per game or per mod. Launching a title in WinlatorXR does not make it a VR game. Somebody has to wire up that specific title first. That work is done for Halo: Combat Evolved, which the project ships as a mod called HWXR, and there is a sample project named SixDOFinator for anyone who wants to try it on something else.
What Valve refused stops mattering
The Half-Life 2 VR Mod team settled the standalone question years ago, and the answer is still sitting on their FAQ. There is no legally available Android build of the Source engine to port to, and Valve declined to give consent or support, so the team said it would not pursue a standalone release.

WinlatorXR gets around that by porting nothing at all. It runs the Windows build you already bought, on the headset, through several layers of emulation, slowly. No license changes hands. The catch sits upstream of the graphics. The mod requires that you own Half-Life 2 on Steam, and WinlatorXR's own app list marks the Steam client itself as not working on Quest 2, Quest 3, or Pico 4 Ultra. Their newest setup guide covers playing games from Steam anyway, and a sibling project, GameNativeXR, is building the store integrations. Expect that seam to be where your evening goes.
Alyx turned up Thursday night
A Half-Life: Alyx tutorial landed on the site late Thursday, and the wording around it is defensive in a way that reads as earned. Not faked. Not pre-rendered. Genuinely running inside the headset, between 15 and 35 frames per second on minimum settings. For a 2020 game designed around a desktop graphics card, they treat that as the achievement, and they are right to.

Read the mode list before you get excited
One thing is undocumented, and it decides what the Half-Life 2 claim actually means. XrAPI supports full stereo, monocular VR where you get 6DOF tracking without stereo rendering, and screen modes where the game stays on a flat panel with tracking bolted on. Those are very different experiences. The project's GTA San Andreas guide says outright that its own result is 3DoF and not true VR, which is the candor that makes the rest of the site credible. For Half-Life 2 there is no tutorial entry, no write-up, and nothing stating whether the SteamVR mod or the flat game is what runs in those test videos.
If you want to try it yourself
Here is the actual path, and every link below goes to the people who built the thing rather than to a secondhand rehost. WinlatorXR is listed on SideQuest, which is the normal way to install it, and the builds also sit on the GitHub releases page if you would rather take the APK straight from source. You need developer mode turned on in the headset first. Quest 3 and 3S and the Pico 4 Ultra are the devices the project treats as current, and Quest 2 still works with the Turnip graphics driver enabled.
Follow the project's own guides rather than anything written about them. The tutorials page covers first-time setup, running games from Steam, the Halo mod, and as of Thursday night, Alyx. The compatibility list tells you what has actually run and on which headset. When something breaks, and something will, r/WinlatorXR and the project Discord are where the fixes get posted first.
One requirement is not negotiable. You have to own the game. Half-Life 2: VR Mod is free, but it needs Half-Life 2 in your own Steam library, family sharing does not count, and the mod team's FAQ is the reference for what it does and does not support. Everything above runs software you already bought. If a guide anywhere offers you the game itself, close the tab.
Eight days ago the same mod cleared Steam Frame verification, which is Valve's own bar, on Valve's own hardware, through Proton and a bundled dxvk. This is the same instinct with more layers underneath it and no certification in sight. One of those is a platform. The other is a handful of people showing what a headset you can already buy will do when nobody waits for permission.
