Somnium Space v3.1.6 Rebuilds the Platform Ahead of Its Return to Steam

Somnium Space rolled out version 3.1.6 today, and the social VR platform is calling it the biggest update it has ever shipped. For once the label fits. The release changes the platform's core world model and moves creator scripting onto the server, and it lands just ahead of Somnium's first Steam release since Valve delisted it five years ago.

The headline change is world instances. Somnium has always been built around a single persistent world, one continuous space where everything happened in public. An instance is a separate copy of a world spun up for a specific group, which is how VRChat has worked since the beginning. With v3.1.6 you can open a friends instance, a friends+ instance, a paid instance, or a PIN-protected one. Set a PIN, hand it to your group, and you have a private room. That unlocks the gatherings a persistent world was always awkward at hosting: ticketed concerts, classrooms, moderated meetups, anything where you need a door.

Creators get the other big piece, server-side scripting. Scripts now run on Somnium's infrastructure, which removes the local installation requirements that used to stand between a creator and a working scripted world. If you have ever watched someone bounce off a platform because step one was installing a toolchain, you know why this matters. Lowering that barrier is the unglamorous kind of decision that determines whether a creator ecosystem grows or stalls.

The rest of the patch is plumbing. Friends, favorites, bubble chat, global chat, blocked users, and moderation tools all got redesigned, and voice chat is supposed to be more reliable. Desktop mode picked up better onboarding, smoother movement and sprinting, controller support, and expanded Inspector functionality, a clear signal that Somnium wants to be usable by people who do not own a headset at all. None of that demos well. All of it is what people actually quit platforms over.

Back on Steam After Five Years

Somnium Space is headed back to Steam with full Steam Deck support, and versions for Steam Frame and Apple Vision Pro are planned to follow. Those will be the platform's first standalone releases. There is no Quest version on the roadmap.

The history here deserves a paragraph. Somnium auctioned virtual land as NFTs in October 2019 and launched its CUBE token a year later, which put it on the wrong side of Valve's 2021 purge of crypto and NFT games and got it pulled from the store. Valve's policy has not changed. So the Steam return means Somnium has to detangle itself from the crypto architecture it was once loudly proud of, and the free private instances in this update quietly do some of that work already. The one thing carrying over untouched is the platform's ID verification system, which checks that every user is over 18. No other major social VR platform does that, and it is the clearest part of Somnium's identity.

Social VR has had a rough year. Rec Room shut down, and Meta pulled Horizon Worlds off Quest in June. Against that backdrop, an independent platform shipping its largest update and expanding to three new devices is welcome news, even if nobody outside the company can see its books. Somnium has spent years building in the open without letting up, and v3.1.6 reads like a team preparing the house for guests. The Steam page is the invitation. Now it needs people to show up.
