Valve Revised Two Steam Frame Packages on September 3, the First Change in 121 Days

Two of the seven Steam packages attached to the Steam Frame changed on September 3. SteamDB's record for the headset puts the revisions to Steam Sub 1629484 and Steam Sub 1629486 at 17:51 and 17:52 UTC. The other five packages, and the hardware listing itself, last moved on May 5. That is 121 days of nothing, then two edits a minute apart.

A package is the unit Steam actually sells. It is what an account is granted at checkout, and for hardware each one maps to a SKU: a storage tier, a bundle, a regional variant. Valve's November announcement listed 256GB and 1TB versions of the Frame. Two live packages is the count a two-tier launch needs.

The account that tracks these records, Steam Hardware Updates, flagged the change the same afternoon and supplied the comparison that matters. Steam Machine packages moved on June 16. Its reservation lottery opened June 22. The Steam Controller ran the same way, with package edits hours to days ahead of the announcement. Six days is the gap to hold in mind.

Then the second signal. Late on September 4, dataminer Brad Lynch posted that a reservation system was already live in Steam's backend for the two SKUs, and had probably been switched on the previous day alongside the package edits. He added that nothing in the data lets anyone beat the lottery. Worth repeating, since someone will try.

What six days would mean

Count forward from September 3 and the Steam Machine's gap lands on September 9. The week of September 7 is the working assumption in every report since. Lynch had already told the Gamertag VR podcast in late August, as Notebookcheck reported on August 28, that review units were in reviewers' hands and that shipping would start around September 14, roughly a week after reservations. The two claims now line up without either needing to be adjusted.

Summer ends September 22. Meta Connect opens September 23. Valve said summer, and the calendar has 16 days of it left.

What is not in the data

A price. A package revision carries no dollar figure, and SteamDB's public view of these subs shows only that they exist and when they changed. Lynch's podcast estimate was north of $1,000. The Steam Machine's $1,049 is still the only Valve hardware price of this generation to measure against, and the memory market that pushed it there has not improved since June.

A date. Package edits precede an announcement. They are not one. Valve could touch the same records again next week and say nothing, and the Steam Machine precedent is exactly one launch old. Six days is a sample of one and a half.

A first-party game. Nothing in the package data speaks to software, and Valve has still not named a launch title. The unboxing and setup videos that fell out of the Steam client on August 19 showed retail packaging and an accessories kit. They did not show a game.

The catalog kept moving

Valve's Great on Frame page reports 117 matches as of September 6, up from 98 on August 27. The filter counts read 75 Action, 55 Adventure, 50 Casual, 32 Simulation and 19 RPG. Nineteen additions in ten days is the slowest stretch since July as a percentage and the fastest as a raw count, which is what a list looks like when it is being filled for a launch rather than a demo.

Third parties are dating around it. Gunman Contracts: Stand Alone set September 10 on its own. Detective VR lists September 9 on Steam. Neither developer has said Valve told them anything. Both picked the week the package math points at.

Developer hardware is on camera too. Maru VR, the studio behind Bootstrap Island, posted a video of the headset on September 3 showing wireless streaming through the dongle, foveated streaming and finger tracking, as PC Guide reported. Studios film hardware when they are allowed to, or when they no longer care.

What a buyer does with this

The practical reading is short. If the lottery follows the Machine's, it opens with little notice, stays open about three days, and sends purchase emails roughly a week later. Decide the budget now, against a number closer to $1,049 than $899. Have the Steam account that will place the order signed in with a payment method attached. And read nothing into which package gets the earlier email. That part is random, by Valve's design and by Lynch's warning both.
