Ultimechs Gets Twelve Days' Notice After Nearly Three Years of Steam Silence

Twelve days. That is the distance between Resolution Games posting the notice and the day Ultimechs stops being a multiplayer game.

The post went up on Steam on Thursday under the title "An Update on Ultimechs," and it is short enough to quote most of it. Online multiplayer ends on October 20, 2026. The game stays installed and stays playable, as a single-player experience. On that same date it leaves the Steam Store, and so does the Ultimechs Spectator, the separate client that "will no longer be able to spectate any matches." In-app purchases are already switched off, though any UltiCoins you bought are still yours to spend. A matching notice on the game's Quest listing says it leaves the Meta Horizon Store the same day. Neither post gives a reason.

Then the sign-off, which is the part that stuck with me: "Thank you to everyone who has competed in the arena with us over the years. Keep those GauntJets flying!"

What is actually being switched off

Ultimechs went up free on September 15, 2022. You pilot a mech anchored to a pad at your end of a glass arena and you hit a ball with rocket-propelled fists, the GauntJets of the sign-off. Three chassis, Viper, Nitro and Titan, each with its own trick: a HyperStrike, a MegaBlast, a Holowall you drop in front of the goal. Scores sit on a wall-sized board. Red and blue. It is Rocket League played with your hands, and when a shot lands the arena throws confetti butterflies at you.

The Steam listing tags it Online PvP, Online Co-op and Cross-Platform Multiplayer. That is the game. Single-player is the mode that survives October 20, and single-player was never the point.

It had a league

Ultimechs did not have a multiplayer mode bolted on the side. It had a competitive scene, and Resolution Games built equipment for it.

In March 2023 the studio released the Ultimechs Spectator free on Steam as its own application, so matches could be watched on a PC. The announcement is plain about who it was for: "While anyone can use it the main purpose of the Ultimechs Spectator is for content creators and tournament organizers to be able to view matches in a much easier way." The same post pointed readers at sign-ups for Ultimechs VR Master League Season 1, and mentioned that an earlier build of the client had already been used for the VRML Pre-Season.

Three months later came a balance patch. Version 1.7.1, June 2023, and read what the studio says it tuned against: "These changes have been based on statistics from the game, VRML matches, as well as community feedback." Titan lost health and got a smaller buff than the other two. The ball's spin and curve came down slightly. The Supercharge spawn cooldown went from 15 to 14. The bots on the Inhuman difficulty were adjusted for, in the studio's words, the hardcore players still pushing the limits of how to play the game.

That is a developer watching league tape. The Spectator client is the piece of software that existed purely so other people could watch those matches, and it is being delisted on the same day as the game, with its one function withdrawn.

And then nothing, for nearly three years

Before Thursday, the most recent post on the game's Steam announcements page was dated October 25, 2023. It was a small patch about crash reporting. Between that and the shutdown notice there is a gap of two years and eleven months on the public feed.

I want to be careful with that number, because a Steam page is one channel and a studio can be active on Discord or the Horizon Store without posting there. But it is the record anyone can check, and on that record a game with a league went quiet in late 2023 and spoke again this week to say it was over.

The decent minimum, again

In July I wrote about Triangle Factory closing Hyper Dash's servers and shipping a final update that kept the game launchable offline. I called that offline build a gravestone and meant it as a compliment, because the usual exit in VR is an icon that stops opening. Resolution Games has done the same decent thing here. Nothing you installed stops working, your purchased currency still spends, and nobody is being asked to say goodbye to an icon that will not launch.

It is still worth naming what that leaves you with. The surviving mode is bots. Good bots, by the sound of those patch notes, tuned by people who cared. But a sport is not the ball and the arena. It is the person at the other end of it, and on October 20 that person logs off for good.

This is not a studio falling over

Worth separating this from the year's other exits. Resolution Games is not Polyarc and it is not Survios. In June, Jordan Kuo wrote up how Demeo had become the one XR title running across all six major headset platforms, which is the opposite of a studio in retreat. Resolution is shipping.

Which makes this the quieter kind of ending. No layoffs announcement, no closure post, no casualty list. Just a company deciding that one of its games no longer justifies the servers it runs on. The studio has not said that is the reason, and I am reading it rather than reporting it. There is no other reason on offer.

What outlasts what

Split-screen Mario Kart 64 on a couch in 1998, four of us crammed around one television. Twenty-eight years later that cartridge still does everything it did that night. It never needed permission from anything.

Ultimechs was better looking than that, free to start, cross-platform, and organized enough to run a league. It gets twelve days.

If you have UltiCoins sitting in the game, spend them. If you ever played in a VRML season, the window to get a last match in closes on October 20.
