Best VR Headset for Fitness 2026: Workout Picks

Last updated: October 23, 2026

Part of our Best VR Headsets buyer's guide. For the workouts themselves, see our best VR fitness apps ranking.

The best VR headset for fitness in 2026 is the Meta Quest 3S at $349.99. Every app on our VR fitness ranking runs on it, from Supernatural and FitXR to Les Mills Bodycombat and Thrill of the Fight 2, it needs no PC or console, and Meta rates its battery at up to 2.5 hours of average use. Spend the extra $250 on a Quest 3 only if the 3S's lens settings do not suit your eyes or you want sharper optics for the rest of VR. Either way, budget about $110 more for a better strap and a face pad you can sweat into.

What a workout headset actually needs

The library comes first, and it is lopsided. All ten apps on our fitness ranking run on Quest. Five of them reach PS VR2. One reaches Vision Pro. Supernatural, the one most people buy a headset for, is Quest only and sold only in the US and Canada.

After that it is the unglamorous stuff. A face pad you can wipe or air out, because Meta tells you to wipe the headset down after every active session. A strap that stays put when you duck. No cable. A battery that outlasts the workout, and enough room to swing your arms without clipping a lamp. Display sharpness, the thing most headset guides rank first, matters least here: you are reading a target, not a spreadsheet.

At $349.99 for 128GB (or $449.99 for 256GB), the Quest 3S gets you the whole Quest fitness library for the price of a few months at a boutique gym. Meta rates it at up to 2.5 hours of average use, a little more than the Quest 3's 2.2, and says it is about two grams lighter than the Quest 3's 515, which is to say they weigh the same on your face. It also has the one accessory Meta makes for sweaty faces specifically: the $39.99 Quest 3S Breathable Facial Interface, which fits only the 3S. Meta's own listing admits that “in very bright rooms, you may notice light coming through,” a fair trade for air on your cheeks.

The compromise is in the lenses. The 3S uses Fresnel lenses with three spacing positions, at 58, 63 and 68 mm by Meta's help page. If your eyes sit near one of those, nobody doing squats in Supernatural will notice the difference. If they sit well between or outside them, the image can stay soft however you set it, and that is the moment to pay for the Quest 3. Our Quest 3 vs Quest 3S comparison covers the rest of the gap.

2. Meta Quest 3, for a better fit and everything after the workout

The $599.99 Quest 3 runs exactly the same workouts. What the money buys is fit and clarity. A wheel moves its pancake lenses anywhere from 53 to 75 mm, so it suits more faces than the 3S's three clicks, and the image stays sharp further toward the edges. It also comes with 512GB. For fitness, the useful extra is the $39.99 Silicone Facial Interface, which wipes clean and which Meta's own comparison table marks “Best for: Active sessions.” Meta also sells an Open Facial Interface for the Quest 3 at the same price that, in Meta's words, “lets heat and sweat out.” Buy the Quest 3 if the headset is for games and movies too, and the workouts are one use among several.

The gear that matters more than the headset

Neither Quest ships with a strap built for this. The included soft strap weighs 56.5 grams and does its job until you throw a hook. The $69.99 Elite Strap fits both headsets and is the one Meta lists as best for active sessions. The version with a battery in the back adds about two hours, by Meta's figure, at 331 grams against the plain Elite Strap's 183; most people finish a workout well inside the standard battery, so the plain one is the better buy for fitness. Whatever pad you use, wipe it down. Meta's health and safety warnings ask you to “keep your Meta Quest dry from sweat and wipe down after each use (particularly each active use).”

Controllers or bare hands?

Hand tracking is arriving in fitness app by app, not all at once. FitXR already lets you train across its studios with your hands, and Synth Riders switched it on for its entire library on Quest 3 and 3S in October. Supernatural puts hand tracking on its roadmap under “2027 & beyond.” Beat Saber's Flux update adds a hand-tracking mode and the option to play the whole game without controllers in spring 2027. Les Mills Bodycombat, Thrill of the Fight 2 and Pistol Whip still want controllers in your hands.

One catch before you put the controllers in a drawer. Meta warns that with hands instead of controllers, “safety boundaries and other alerts may not work if your hands are not in the limited view of your Passthrough sensors.” A punch thrown wide is exactly that.

Tracking your workouts

Quest used to count calories across every app. That was Move, and Meta discontinued it on March 31, 2025, taking its Apple Health and Health Connect sync with it. Tracking now lives inside each app, and the gaps show: Supernatural's FAQ says heart rate tracking is still on the way after its October relaunch. If you wear an Apple Watch, the simplest workaround is Apple's own: the Workout app lists a Fitness Gaming type. Start it, then put the headset on.

Why the other headsets are not the pick

PlayStation VR2. Five of our ten fitness apps are on it, including Beat Saber, Les Mills Bodycombat and Synth Riders. Supernatural, FitXR and Thrill of the Fight 2 are not. It weighs about 560 grams and runs on a single cable to the PS5, which is a lot of cord to keep out from under your feet during a boxing round. It is also hard to buy: Sony's US store lists only the Sense controller charging station, and new US stock has dried up.

Valve Steam Frame. Thrill of the Fight 2 now runs on it standalone, with crossplay against Quest, and Valve rates Synth Riders Verified on it too. But Road to VR's review measured one to one and a half hours of battery in mixed use, it costs $1,059, and Valve told reservation holders their order email comes by December or in 2027. Everything else on the Steam Frame is excellent; a gym it is not, yet.

Apple Vision Pro and Samsung Galaxy XR. Apple lists the Vision Pro at 750 to 800 grams plus a 353-gram battery on a cable, and its safety guide says it is designed for use “in controlled areas that are safe, on a level surface.” Synth Riders, through Apple Arcade, is the one app from our fitness ranking we found on it. The $1,799.99 Galaxy XR weighs 545 grams by Samsung's spec page, ships without controllers, and Synth Riders has launched on it controller-free.

Worth waiting for? Meta VR Glasses

The most interesting fitness hardware of the next year is not a headset in the usual sense. Meta VR Glasses weigh about 100 grams on the face, with a separate puck handling compute, battery and storage, and Meta says they go on sale in spring 2027 for $1,299.99. Meta has already named Supernatural a day-one title, pitching it as “hardware so light the only thing you feel is the workout,” and Synth Riders says it will be ready on day one too. Nobody has sweated through a session in them yet, and at nearly four times the price of a Quest 3S they are a bet on comfort, not a bargain. If you want to start working out this winter, buy the Quest now.

Before your first session

Meta's safety warnings are blunter about exercise than most people expect. Keep a buffer of about 1 to 2 feet beyond the boundary you draw, because, in Meta's words, “a safety boundary may not alert you fast enough if you are moving quickly.” There is no overhead boundary, so check the ceiling fan before an uppercut. Face-down positions like a push-up, and real weights, “can increase risk of injury,” Meta says. It suggests starting with sessions of no more than 30 minutes, then a 15-minute break, and like any exercise program, it says to consult a doctor before you begin.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best VR headset for fitness?

The Meta Quest 3S at $349.99 is the best VR headset for fitness for most people. Every app on VR.org's fitness ranking runs on it, including Supernatural, FitXR, Les Mills Bodycombat, Beat Saber and Thrill of the Fight 2, it needs no PC or console, and Meta rates its battery at up to 2.5 hours of average use. The $599.99 Quest 3 is worth the extra if the 3S's three lens positions do not fit your eyes or you want sharper lenses for everything else you do in VR.

Is the Quest 3 or Quest 3S better for working out?

For workouts alone, the Quest 3S. Both weigh about the same (Meta lists 515 grams for the Quest 3 and says the 3S is about two grams lighter), both run the same fitness apps, and Meta rates the 3S at up to 2.5 hours of average use against 2.2 for the Quest 3. The Quest 3 wins on fit and optics: its lenses adjust continuously from 53 to 75 mm where the 3S has three fixed positions at 58, 63 and 68 mm, and its pancake lenses are sharper across the view.

Can you work out in VR without controllers?

In some apps. FitXR and Synth Riders support hand tracking on Quest, and Synth Riders added it across its whole library on Quest 3 and 3S in October 2026. Supernatural lists hand tracking on its roadmap for 2027 and beyond, Beat Saber's hand-tracking mode arrives in spring 2027, and Les Mills Bodycombat and Thrill of the Fight 2 still need controllers. Meta warns that with hands instead of controllers, safety boundary alerts may not work when your hands leave the view of the headset's cameras.

Does Quest track calories or sync with Apple Health?

Not on its own anymore. Meta shut down Move, the system-wide tracker that synced Quest workouts to Apple Health and Health Connect, on March 31, 2025, so tracking now happens inside each fitness app. If you wear an Apple Watch, its Workout app lists a Fitness Gaming type you can start before you put the headset on.

Can you work out on PS VR2, Steam Frame or Vision Pro?

Partly. PS VR2 has Beat Saber, Les Mills Bodycombat, Synth Riders, Pistol Whip and Creed, but not Supernatural, FitXR or Thrill of the Fight 2, it runs on a cable to the PS5, and Sony's US store has no new stock. Steam Frame runs Thrill of the Fight 2 and Synth Riders standalone, but Road to VR measured one to one and a half hours of battery and new orders join a waitlist. Vision Pro weighs 750 to 800 grams plus a separate battery, and Synth Riders, through Apple Arcade, is the one app from our fitness ranking we found with a Vision Pro version.
