Best VR Horror Games 2026

Last updated: October 1, 2026

Part of our Best Of 2026 guide collection. For the ranked version, see the ten scariest VR games.

The best VR horror games in 2026 are Resident Evil 4 VR on Quest, Resident Evil Village on PS VR2 and Half-Life: Alyx on PC VR, with Phasmophobia as the pick for playing with friends and Little Nightmares VR: Altered Echoes as the best new release of the year. Which one you should buy depends almost entirely on the headset you own, because the three biggest names here are each locked to one platform. This guide covers fourteen games, says plainly where each one runs, and links every platform to its official store page. Prices are US list prices checked on October 1, 2026. Steam had most of this list discounted that day, so expect to pay less there.

Why horror works better in a headset

A monitor gives fear a frame. Whatever is coming for you lives inside a rectangle, and some part of your brain knows where the rectangle ends. A headset takes the frame away. The thing is behind you, the only way to check is to turn your actual head, and the sound of it has a position in the room. That is the whole difference, and it is why games that are tense on a television become hard to finish in VR.

It also means the genre punishes bad ports. The games below were either built for VR or rebuilt for it with real care: weapons you reload by hand, doors you push with your own arm, objects that have weight. We go deeper on the mechanics in why VR is the perfect horror machine.

1. Resident Evil 4 VR

Watch: Resident Evil 4 | Full Length Gameplay Trailer | Oculus Quest 2 on YouTube →

Developer: Armature Studio, with Capcom and Oculus Studios | Platform: Quest 2, Quest 3, Quest 3S, Quest Pro | Price: $39.99

The best horror game on Quest came out on October 21, 2021 and nothing on the platform has taken the spot from it since. Armature rebuilt Capcom's 2005 game in first person, so the pistol comes off your hip, the knife off your chest, and every reload is something your hands have to finish while the village closes in. The opening siege is the test. A chainsaw is running somewhere behind you and you are fumbling a shotgun shell. It is a Quest exclusive, it holds 4.7 stars from about 13,000 ratings on the Horizon Store, and it is the first thing to buy if a Quest is the only headset in the house.

2. Resident Evil Village

Image: Capcom / Steam

Developer: Capcom | Platform: PS5 with the free VR Mode add-on (PS VR2 required) | Price: $39.99, VR Mode free

The strongest argument for owning a PS VR2 is a free download. Capcom added a VR Mode to Village that covers the whole campaign, and it is the reason the game sits here ahead of anything built for the headset from scratch. Castle Dimitrescu was already about being hunted through rooms that are too big for you. In a headset the scale lands properly, and the House Beneviento stretch, where the game takes your weapons away, is the most frightening hour on the platform. The base game is $39.99 and was in the PlayStation Plus Extra catalog when we checked. Capcom did the same thing for the Resident Evil 4 remake, whose VR Mode is also free. Neither VR mode exists on Steam.

3. Half-Life: Alyx

Half-Life: Alyx key art, a small figure facing a towering Combine structure above ruined streets
Image: Valve / Steam

Developer: Valve | Platform: PC VR, and included with every Steam Frame | Price: $59.99

Alyx is not sold as a horror game and it contains the best horror chapter in VR. Jeff is a blind creature that hunts by sound, the level is a vodka distillery full of glass bottles, and for the length of the chapter every object you brush against is a decision. You end up covering your own mouth. The rest of the game is a shooter with long quiet stretches of flashlight and headcrabs, which is its own kind of dread. A copy comes with every Steam Frame and runs on the headset with no PC, which makes Jeff the scariest thing a Frame owner has on day one.

4. Phasmophobia

Image: Kinetic Games / Steam

Developer: Kinetic Games | Platform: PC VR, PS VR2 | Price: $19.99

The one to play with other people. Up to four of you walk into a house with thermometers, cameras and a spirit box, and the ghost listens through your real microphone, so the brave thing is also the loud thing. It plays flat or in VR on the same servers, which means the friend without a headset can still come. Kinetic replaced the whole VR character rig in August, a rebuild of the body the game hangs on your headset and controllers. Two warnings. It is not on Quest, so a Quest owner needs a PC to stream from. And Valve currently rates it Unsupported on Steam Frame for standalone play.

5. Alien: Rogue Incursion

Alien: Rogue Incursion Part One key art with a Xenomorph looming over a lone armed figure
Image: Survios / Steam

Developer: Survios | Platform: Quest 3, Quest 3S, PS VR2, PC VR | Price: $39.99

A motion tracker in one hand and a pulse rifle in the other is the whole pitch, and it works. The Xenomorphs come through vents and along ceilings, the tracker pings before you can see anything, and the game is at its best in the seconds between the ping and the shape. One thing to know before you buy: this is Part One, and it ends on a cliffhanger. Survios reportedly laid off most of its development team in May, so nobody can promise a Part Two. What is here is still one of the better-looking horror games on any headset, and the Quest version needs a Quest 3 or 3S.

6. MADiSON VR

Image: Bloodious Games / Steam

Developer: Bloodious Games | Platform: PC VR, PS VR2, Quest | Price: $34.99 on Steam and PS VR2, $29.99 on Quest

Almost no combat and almost no relief. You move through a house with an instant camera, and progress means raising the viewfinder in the dark, firing the flash and waiting for the print to show what was in the room with you. It is a slow, narrow, sound-led game, and plenty of people who start it do not finish. Pick your platform with care. The PC VR and PS VR2 versions are the ones to buy. The Quest release, sold as MADiSON, holds 3.2 stars from about 150 ratings on the Horizon Store, well under everything else on this page.

7. The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners

The Walking Dead: Saints and Sinners key art, a survivor holding a bloodied axe facing a flooded street full of walkers
Image: Skydance Interactive / Steam

Developer: Skydance Interactive | Platform: Quest, PS VR2, PC VR | Price: $29.99 on Quest, $19.99 on PS VR2 and Steam

Six years old and still the reference for how a zombie should feel in your hands. A knife has to be driven in and then pulled back out. A walker you grab by the head stays grabbed while you decide what to do about the other three. The horror is less in any single scare than in the arithmetic: flooded New Orleans streets, a bell that brings the horde at the end of every day, and a backpack that never has enough in it. It runs on Quest, PS VR2 and PC and has been cheap for years, which makes it the safest recommendation on this page.

8. Into the Radius 2

Image: CM Games / Steam

Developer: CM Games | Platform: PC VR, Quest 3, Quest 3S, PS VR2 from October 8 | Price: $39.99

Dread without jump scares. The Pechorsk zone is quiet, wrong, and scattered with anomalies and pale figures that stand a little too still until they do not. You check your magazine by looking at it, you count what is left, and you walk further into a place every instinct says to leave because the loot is out there. The 1.0 release arrived on PC VR in April with a full story and two-player co-op, and the PS VR2 version is dated October 8 without co-op at launch. On Quest it needs a Quest 3 or 3S.

9. Metro Awakening

Metro Awakening VR key art, a gloved hand with a wrist timer raising a weapon at a mutant in a green-lit tunnel
Image: Vertigo Games / Steam

Developer: Vertigo Games | Platform: Quest, PS VR2, PC VR | Price: $29.99

The right first horror game. Metro Awakening is frightening by atmosphere and never by ambush: the tunnels under Moscow, a light that is never bright enough, a gas mask that fogs and has to be wiped with your own hand. Long quiet stretches break into fights you feel in your shoulders, then go quiet again. It is a complete, well-paced campaign, it looks good even on standalone hardware, and it is on all three major platforms at the same $29.99 list price on Quest and Steam. Start here, then work toward the top of the list.

10. Little Nightmares VR: Altered Echoes

Image: Bandai Namco / Steam

Developer: Iconik, published by Bandai Namco | Platform: Quest, PS VR2, PC VR | Price: $29.99

The best new horror release of 2026 so far. The flat Little Nightmares games show you a child in a dollhouse from a safe distance. Altered Echoes, out since April 23, puts you inside the dollhouse at the child's height, hiding under furniture while something enormous walks past and solving puzzles with your own hands. It is closer to stealth and unease than to outright terror, which also makes it a good pick for players who bounce off gore. It is one of the few horror games Valve has certified for standalone play on Steam Frame. Our preview from April covers the premise.

11. Five Nights at Freddy's: Secret of the Mimic

Five Nights at Freddy's: Secret of the Mimic logo beside a grinning animatronic jester
Image: Steel Wool Studios / Steam

Developer: Steel Wool Studios | Platform: PC VR, PS5 (PS VR2 optional) | Price: $39.99

The franchise that made a genre out of waiting in one room while something decides whether tonight is the night. Secret of the Mimic is a full first-person adventure, not a set of minigames, and the animatronics are roughly your size and roughly an arm's length away. VR support reached Steam on May 20, nearly a year after the flat release. It plays on a monitor or in a headset from the same purchase. A Quest version is expected later in 2026 and is on our release calendar.

12. Half-Life 2: VR Mod

Image: Source VR Mod Team / Steam

Developer: Source VR Mod Team, published by Flat2VR Studios | Platform: PC VR, certified for Steam Frame | Price: Free, requires Half-Life 2

The best free scare in VR is a level from 2004. Ravenholm is the town Half-Life 2 tells you not to go to, and the mod turns it into a headset game where the gravity gun is the main weapon, so every kill starts with pointing your own arm at a saw blade on the ground while something shuffles closer. The mod costs nothing, but it needs Half-Life 2 in your own Steam library, and a family-shared copy does not count. It installs from Steam like any other game, and the team keeps setup notes on its own site. It cleared Steam Frame certification in August.

13. Deadly Delivery

Deadly Delivery key art, a goblin courier with a parcel beside a chained, screaming monster
Image: Flat Head Studio / Steam

Developer: Flat Head Studio | Platform: Quest, PC VR | Price: $9.99

The cheap one for a group. Up to six players are delivery goblins carrying parcels into haunted mines, trying to hit a quota before whatever lives down there finds them, with crossplay between Quest and PC. It is as much comedy as horror, and that is the point: this is the game for the friends who will not last ten minutes in MADiSON. It holds 4.9 stars from about 3,800 ratings on the Horizon Store, Valve has certified it for standalone play on Steam Frame, and it costs less than a movie ticket.

14. Resident Evil 7 biohazard

Image: Capcom / Steam

Developer: Capcom | Platform: PlayStation, VR on a PS4 with the original PlayStation VR only | Price: $19.99

Last on this page for one reason, and it is not quality. Our ranking of the scariest VR games puts it first. The Baker house, the dinner table, a family that will not stay down: Capcom built the game in first person from the start, and the whole campaign plays in a headset. The catch is the hardware. The PlayStation Store states that the VR features require playing on a PS4, which means the original PlayStation VR. It does not work with PS VR2, and the Steam version has no official VR mode. If you still have a PS VR in a closet, this is the reason to dig it out this month.

Best VR horror games by headset

Meta Quest 3 and 3S. Start with Resident Evil 4 VR, then Saints & Sinners and Metro Awakening. All three also run on Quest 2. Alien: Rogue Incursion and Into the Radius 2 need the newer headsets. What a Quest cannot play on its own: Phasmophobia, Half-Life: Alyx and either Capcom VR Mode. The first two stream from a gaming PC.

PlayStation VR2. The strongest horror shelf of any headset, mostly because of Capcom. Resident Evil Village and the Resident Evil 4 remake both have free VR Modes, and Phasmophobia, MADiSON VR, Alien: Rogue Incursion and Metro Awakening are all here. Into the Radius 2 joins them on October 8.

PC VR. Eleven of the fourteen games on this page are on Steam, and three are best there: Half-Life: Alyx, Phasmophobia and the free Half-Life 2: VR Mod. A Quest connected to a gaming PC plays all eleven.

Steam Frame. Streaming from a PC, the Frame plays the same eleven. On its own it is thinner. As of October 1, Valve's Great on Frame list of certified standalone games includes Little Nightmares VR, Half-Life 2: VR Mod and Deadly Delivery, plus both Arizona Sunshine games for zombies. Alyx runs standalone but is not certified, and Phasmophobia is rated Unsupported. We checked every title against Valve's data.

New and coming this October

October 2026 is light on new horror, which is one more reason the list above leans on proven games. Three dates are worth knowing. Shil, a two-tone psychological horror puzzler from OSM Games, reaches Quest on October 8 at $14.99, with a Steam date still to be announced. Into the Radius 2 lands on PS VR2 the same day. Dark Trip, a gothic horror escape room that plays flat or in VR, arrives on Steam on October 29.

Further out, the Quest version of Five Nights at Freddy's: Secret of the Mimic is expected later in 2026, and Already Dead, a fixed-camera survival horror game for PS VR2, has a fall window with no date. Our VR release dates tracker follows all of them.

How to get through your first VR horror game

Play in short sessions. Twenty or thirty minutes is plenty at first, and tolerance builds faster than most people expect. Keep a lamp on in the room if it helps; the headset blocks it out, but knowing it is there matters more than it should.

Turn on the comfort options before you start, not after you feel ill. Teleport or snap turning and a vignette during movement fix most nausea, and feeling sick while frightened is a quick way to decide VR is not for you. Play standing if you have the space, since leaning and ducking are half of what these games are built around. And take the headset off when you need to. The fear is the feature, but you still set the pace. If you are new to VR in general, start with our beginner's guide.

Frequently asked questions

What is the scariest VR game?

On current headsets the closest equivalents are Resident Evil Village on PS VR2, MADiSON VR on PC VR and PS VR2, and the Jeff chapter of Half-Life: Alyx on PC VR.

What is the best VR horror game on Meta Quest 3?

Resident Evil 4 VR, a Quest exclusive at $39.99, is the best horror game on Quest. The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners and Metro Awakening are the next two to buy, and both run on Quest 2 as well. Alien: Rogue Incursion and Into the Radius 2 need a Quest 3 or Quest 3S.

What are the best horror games on PS VR2?

Resident Evil Village with its free VR Mode add-on is the best horror game on PS VR2, followed by the Resident Evil 4 remake's free VR Mode, Alien: Rogue Incursion, MADiSON VR and Phasmophobia. Into the Radius 2 arrives on PS VR2 on October 8, 2026.

Is Phasmophobia on Meta Quest?

No. Phasmophobia is sold on Steam, where it supports PC VR headsets, and on PS5 with PS VR2 support. A Quest owner can play the Steam version by streaming from a gaming PC with Steam Link or Virtual Desktop. There is no standalone Quest version.

Are there any free VR horror games?

Half-Life 2: VR Mod is free on Steam and includes Ravenholm, one of the most famous horror levels in gaming. It requires Half-Life 2 in your own Steam library. On PS VR2 the VR Modes for Resident Evil Village and the Resident Evil 4 remake are free add-ons, though each needs the base game.

Which VR horror games run on Steam Frame without a PC?

As of October 1, 2026, Valve's Great on Frame list of certified standalone games includes Little Nightmares VR: Altered Echoes, Half-Life 2: VR Mod and its Episode One, Deadly Delivery, Arizona Sunshine 2 and the Arizona Sunshine Remake. Half-Life: Alyx is included with the headset and runs standalone, though it is not on the certified list. Phasmophobia is rated Unsupported. Anything on Steam still plays when streamed from a gaming PC.

What is a good first VR horror game for beginners?

Metro Awakening is the best starting point because it builds fear through atmosphere and pacing instead of ambushes, and it is available on Quest, PS VR2 and PC VR. Little Nightmares VR: Altered Echoes is a gentler alternative with no gore, and Deadly Delivery is the pick for a group that wants to laugh as much as scream.
